Summary/Abstract: The history of Novi Sad (Újvidék) in the province of Voivodina does not reach back into distant centuries, much less into the mists of ancient times. The city, located on what had been the southern marches of the medieval Kingdom of Hungary, was built between 1692 and 1788 on the left bank of the Danube, on the site of the earlier medieval settlements of Ó-Péterváradja and Vásárosvárad. The reconstruction of the fortress, the Austrian military campaigns leading to the final expulsion of the Turks and, in particular, the erection of a pontoon-head on the Danube brought about the development of the small settlement of Péterváradi erôd (Petrovaradin) and the surrounding military and frontier outposts of Ratzenstadt and Croatendorf.
