Summary/Abstract: The urban development and embourgeoisement process of Újvidék/Novi Sad, a city built at the crossing of water and land routes, which began its development at the end of the 17th century, was vastly influenced by its geographic position and, more specifically, by its position next to the Danube and its multinational character. Along with the economic and social development, Újvidék/Novi Sad also has a rich and interesting history of its spaces connected to the city dwellers’ leisure time, i.e. its pubs, restaurant and coffee shops. The world of the Danubian harbor, populated by tradespeople, soldiers and travelers, was complemented here by the places preferred by the mostly Serbian citizenship, priests, intellectuals, German tradespeople, Hungarian bureaucrats and poorer social groups. The history of the urban leisure spaces and catering establishments seems to develop as the scene of Újvidék/Novi Sad’s social life, reflecting its multinational, multireligious and multicultural character.
