THE “BUILT CAVE” FROM PIATRA CETII

Summary/Abstract: Piatra Cetii is situated north of Alba Iulia, in Trascău Mountains. At the base of the rocky Walls, there is a cave fortified with a stone wall and the vilagers call it the “Built Cave”. Prehistoric pottery fragments – belonging Coţofeni and Wiettemberg cultures, as well as late feudal ones, wer found inside the cave and around it. There are similar caves in Transylvania – at Turda Gorge (jud Cluj), Mada Gorge, Paroş Cave (jud. Hunedoara) and Veterani Cave by the Danube. The fortification of the caves was done in the 18th century, as a rezult of the guerrilla war by the “Kurutzi” led by Rákóczi II against the ocupation of Transylvania by the Habsburg Empire.
