Summary/Abstract: This paper looks at the issue of memes and specifically the “hungaromemes”, a borderline phenomenon that stands between oral folklore and internet literacy. The authors focus on remixed visual and textual constructions, digitally manipulated images and video files. They study the mode of existence of the internet folklore and its developing basic tendencies. They follow the changes of vocabulary of the new spoken language and point out that the mediatization of traditional oral folklore results in several substantive, stylistic and genre transformations. The natural language texts are just about replaced by visual and multi-media language, giving a life to new (hybrid) genres. The warehouses of internet folklore serve as modern external memory, and carry out the same functions as traditional oral folklore. The authors try to group and categorize memes and devote a special role to “hungaromemes“ based on our traditions, whose interpretation requires a basic knowledge of Hungarian culture.
