Summary/Abstract: The paper examines the quotation of Isaiah in Luke 4 and asks not only about the kind of liberation (aphesis) proclaimed by Jesus in Nazareth, but also why Luke was inspired by the book of Isaiah so much. While Isaiah speaks about external liberation, in Luke/Acts aphesis means rather healing and forgiving, not only for Jews but also for pagans. The author of the gospel takes over Isaiah’s idea of “nations coming to the light of redeemed Jerusalem”, but in a new way. He stresses that the forgiveness of sins is to be preached “to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem”. This can explain Luke’s connecting of Isaiah’s quotation with the stories of Elijah and Elisha in Jesus’s programmatic preaching.
