Summary/Abstract: In this study aimed to compare the traditional method and the method supported by pictures and short stories for teaching the idioms. Furthermore, learning the meanings of new idioms and comprehension of these meanings through frequent repetitions were investigated. In order to do this, two groups of students were formed randomly to constitute Control Group and Experiment Group. The Control Group was given only the definitions of idioms whereas the Experiment Group was firstly given the definition. This was followed by the presentation of the definition through the pictures emphasizing the definition and then original short stories that explained the real meaning of the idiom. Results from the first pre-test did not reveal any significant differences between groups. However, results from the post-test indicated significant differences between the Experiment Group and the Control Group in terms of success. The Experiment Group were more successful, in terms of the number of definitions they have learned, than the Control Group (p 000). This study emphasizes that the method of teaching the meaning of idioms though pictures and short stories is more effective than the traditional idiom instruction.
