Summary/Abstract: This paper deals with man's necessity to face truth and to remain faithful to his own authentic self, or, in D. H. Lawrence's words, to the deepest self. One way to convey metaphysical truth and the essence of things, hidden beyond the world of appearance, is music. The problem of music and its relation to man's authentic self is briefly related to Jane Campion's film The Piano, August Wilson's play Ma Rainey's Black Bottom, Ntozake Shange's play for colored girls who have considered suicide/ when the rainbow is enuf, Sam Shepard's play The Tooth of Crime, as well as to Nietzsche's work The Birth of Tragedy.
