Summary/Abstract: Prostitution for many years it has been viewed by criminal justice professionals, sociologists, lawyers, social workers, and general public to be a serious social problem. "Prostitution" is an elastic concept. It means different things, at different times and in different places. In this article, I define what I and another authors mean by "prostitution". This article looks at the different ways, in which "prostitution" has been viewed and theorized. The article focuses more directly on trends and patters in prostitution and connection between deviance and crime. Using data from a range of sources, sociological and criminological literature, explores definition and prevalence of prostitution, how these patterns are mediated and changed over time.
