Summary/Abstract: The article treats of that aspect of British policy at the Paris Peace Conference in 1919 which concerned the question of the reparations – the ones the winning participants in the First World War insisted on Germany paying. Against the background of British aims in the war and certain matters of internal policy (Lloyd George’s bid for a second term as Prime Minister and his pre-election promises to the British public) the position of the British delegation on the reparation problem is examined. On the basis of documentary material, memoirs of participants in the actual events, and scholarly works on the subject, the author looks into the often contrary stands of the Allies, mainly Great Britain, France, and the United States, on the question of German reparations. Stress is laid on the clash of opinions about the impact on Germany’s further development, particularly the long-term consequences of the conference decisions about the reparation problem.
