Summary/Abstract: A considerable number of foreign decorations (particularly Ottoman and Russian) were granted during the 3rd - 6th decades of the 19th century to the various individuals of Moldavia and Wallachia. In the absence of any "European" distinction, the ruling princes demanded Ottoman decorations for their subjects. The diplomatic representatives of the several countries demanded their own decorations to honor the Moldavians and Vlachs who distinguished themselves in several branches of public life: soldiers, dignitaries and simple civil servants, members of the clergy. It had become a habit to see such and such a boyar displayed with the insignia of the Turkish Order Nichan Iftikhar and the Russian cross of St. Anne etc. The heraldry of the boyars was also greatly developed at the time, an opportunity for these boyars to have them executed with the decorations they received
