Summary/Abstract: During the Tartu period (from 1873 to 1886) M. Veske’s lexicological studies were mainly limited to the Estonian language. They were not numerous but have a permanent value. His lexicological activities started at a meeting of the Learned Estonian Society (1873) where he made a presentation about Wilhelm Thomsen’s dissertation on German loanwords in the Finnic and Saami languages. The goal of his lexicological studies was to explain the origin of Estonian place names, especially the ones with the formant -vere.
