Summary/Abstract: As an artistic and at the same time scientific event, lithography was invented at the end of the eighteenth century as a modality of printing, reproduction and cheaper multiplication of text and image. The vast field of lithography imposes on scientific research a complex, multidisciplinary treatment. This new "artistic industry", from its very beginning, determined value judgments that specifically assimilated technical, historical, national, social and even commercial compositions. From the radiance of the masterpiece to the vicinity of failure, the history of lithography contains a whole range of aesthetic values, higher or more basic. A systematic order of an extremely large production must have in view a unanimously recognized set of norms, relations and benchmarks. One has to know the temporary, well-justified priorities that particularize and classify lithography in the artistic creation proper.
