Summary/Abstract: Prince Charles of Hohenzollern, elected reigning prince of the United Romanian Principality in 1866, decided to identify himself with the ideals of his new homeland. After a difficult stage at the beginning, alongside his collaborators of merit: I. C. Brătiano, I. Ghica, Aleco and Nicolas Golesco, M. Kogălniceanu, Dim. Sturdza, 1 Strat, etc., the Prince succeeded in imposing himself on the Sublime Porte as Prince Regent in conditions worthy of the Romanian state. By giving way to a subtle strategy of firmness and constancy, he began a meticulous diplomatic and public action which was to lead to the obtaining of the total sovereignty of the country. Among other attributes of sovereignty, the right to strike money was considered a priority for both economic development and general policy. Before his journey to Constantinople, for the confirmation of his reign, Prince Charles snatched from Turkey, beforehand, the notification of the right to the national currency. But the fulfillment of this aspiration was retarded and "depreciated," a consequence of the pretensions of the Turks that the currency was marked by the imperial sign which recalled the domination of the Sublime Porte. The Romanians ignored this notification by promulgating the "Law for the foundation of the national currency" in 1867 and acted rapidly by striking the first modern Romanian currencies, the prince's effigy and the legend "Charles Prince of the Roumins"
