Summary/Abstract: During recent decades, art historians have been increasingly interested in the complex treatment of medieval art, including the relations between art and liturgy. This is a new area of research in Estonia. Unfortunately, the local medieval sacral architecture is here still analysed in strictly style-historical context, almost totally forgetting the real purpose of constructing such buildings. We have churches that have retained their original interior for hundreds of years and would thus enable to reconstruct the activities taking place there in the past. One of those is the small Karja Church in Saaremaa.
