Summary/Abstract: In 2016, the German public discourse was dominated by the topics of migration policy, internal security, and national identity. The EU lost quite a bit of its faith in Germany because of the country’s migration policy. The same policy can also bring AfD to power. Faith in Chancellor Merkel also dwindled in Germany and abroad. What is more, Germany faces new challenges as well: Brexit, Donald Trump’s victory, and Russia’s assertive foreign policy, which make changes in German foreign and security policies necessary. Although Germany remains the strongest and most important country in the EU, its position becomes difficult due to the new challenges and unsolved older crises.
