New Source for the Trial of Lipmann Heller and the Political Conflict in the Prague Jewish Community, 1629–1630: Kurtzer Summarischer Wahrhafter Beri

Summary/Abstract: This paper presents and provides editorial access to a hitherto unknown source from 1629–1630 entitled Kurtzer Summarischer Wahrhafter Bericht [A Short Truthful Summary Report] (hereinafter referred to as Kurtzer Bericht). It is a memorandum on the domestic political conflicts within the Prague Jewish community and on the case involving Rabbi Lipmann Heller. After providing an overview of the relevant literature, this introduction to the edited source deals with the archival storage of the document, provides a palaeographic-diplomatic description, explores the credibility of the document, sets out the institutions involved, as well as the parties and individuals acting in the disputes, gives an overview of a series of related conflicts and evaluates the use of this source for further historical research.
