Summary/Abstract: The aim of these considerations is to show the growing demand for knowledge of rural areas in the era of knowledge-based economy. To illustrate the discussed issues the authors used the desk research method (a review of domestic and foreign literature in the field of human capital, education systems, and sustainable development). They also used the available statistical data of Eurostat and CSO (GUS). The studies showed that in the knowledge-based economy, an effective implementation of the sustainable development postulate requires improvement of the quality of education in rural areas, particularly the educational level of the rural population. Although the effectiveness of the EU concept of Life-Long Learning and education as the key factor of sustainable development (ESD) has been proved in a few analyses, its practical implementation is still unsatisfactory. The article provides an analysis in this regard and contributes to the discussion on the increasing demand for knowledge in rural areas.
