Summary/Abstract: This article shows that the palimpsest Par. gr. 2575, included in the “philosophical collection”, was the Greek exemplar used by William of Moerbeke for his translation of Simplicius’ commentary on Aristotle’s Categories. It is also shown that the palimpsest is the only Greek witness of an independent branch of the direct tradition of Simplicius’ commentary. The implications of our discovery for the biography of William are finally discussed.
