Summary/Abstract: This article outlines a methodological approach towards the interpretation of images. This methodology is deeply rooted in semiotics, therefore the act of “reading” an image does not mean reducing images to linguistic discourse. Instead of remaining locked within the binary opposition that has been construed around the two media, the author focuses on those features of reading that articulate aspects of seeing whose taking into account she considers not only re1evant and meaningful, but also visually indispensable. Theoretical claims are supported with examples from art history and popular culture.
