Summary/Abstract: An aim of considerations is to raise awareness of the importance of universities as an essential factor shaping innovativeness in the contemporary economy on the example of the city of Szczecin. There was applied the method of analysis and critical review of the literature as well as the method of statistics using the data being published by the CSO and surveys of population’s incomes. In 2007, Szczecin with the number of 17 universities and other schools of academic rank and more than 61.2 thousand students might become a principal academic centre in this country. The city began too late to watch its developmental chance in the possibility to become an academic city as well as cultural and service centre for the region. According to the CSO’s data, in 2012, the West Pomeranian Province with the value of indicator of 366 students per 10 thousand inhabitants took only the 9th place in the country (per 16 provinces) and the city of Szczecin during the last six years (2007- 2012) took the second place (behind Lodz) in terms of the biggest drop of the number of students of universities per 10 thousand inhabitants. Currently, the region’s potential in the aspect of opportunities for increasing innovativeness still remain academic centres which are not able to independently play the role of supra regional importance, hence it is necessary to combine the potentials and to undertake joint, coordinated actions within the framework of cooperation network.
