Summary/Abstract: It is a well-known fact that non-linguistic factors as influent as linguistic ones in etymology of ethnonyms. Different denominations of one and same ethnic group, which do not seem related to each other at the first glance (for ins. Uz, Guz, Oğuz, Türk) stem indeed from the same source of faith. The Turkic ethnonym Oğuz seems to descend from the bökür/pökür ('ox') case, part of the lunar cult, which was wide-spread from Mesopotamia to Inner Siberia in the 4th-3th centuries B.C. The etymology offered here aims to prove this idea.
