Summary/Abstract: The intention of this paper is to address the question of satire, primarily in Croatian early modern literature, from the perspective of the commonplace assumption that satire criticizes flaws and vices, judging and ridiculing them in order to contribute to their eradication. On the basis of several Croatian poems from the early modern period it is argued that these corrective and noble intentions of satire – announced either by the satirical text itself or by later reflections on it – are most often a mere cover- up for other, less noble designs.
