Summary/Abstract: Despite Milan Begović’ s explicit claims that he wrote the play Adventurer at the Doors »under the impression provoked by the new movement of the psychology of unconscious «, numerous references to Freud’s Interpretation of Dreams discernible in the play have never been precisely retrieved. Their presence is evoked here, however, as a link to contemporary psychoanalytic and feminist discussions regarding the gendering of the spectator’s gaze, since in this play the spectator is a girl suffering from hysteria, split between the character of the dreamer (Girl) and her double (Agneza), who appears on the »screen « of the dreamed »dramatization « within the inner frame of this play-within- the-play. The psychoanalytic paradigm of subjectivation provides also a key for yet another motive of the play which was neglected so far, the content of the letters sent to Agneza by a Nonpresent lover who not only refuses to be visible, but also requires from Agneza to repeatedly submit to his own unobserved observation. Hence the invisible look, projected into the dream’s future, proves to be the true origin of the dreamer’s hysteria, thereby conferring to the protagonist of the play the status of the authentic tragic subject as it is theorized in Lacan’s writings.
