Summary/Abstract: This paper examines the relation between štakavism and šćakavism in Ludvík Kuba’s collection of folk songs. The songs are classified according to the origin of a dialect in order to enlighten the relation between štakavism and šćakavism found in these songs with regard to their respective areas of origin, i.e. in relation to their dialectal base. The analysis of linguistic expression in Kuba’s song collection shows significant breakthrough of štakavism in the songs recorded in the eastern and western areas, whereas šćakavism seems to be more present in the southern areas. The phenomenon is a result of oral koine’s influence.
