Religious Geography: Cult of Saints in Lithuania

Summary/Abstract: This article of religious geography presents objects and places associated with the cult of saints in Lithuania. Different aspects of the cult of saints are analysed in the four chapters of the article: saint’s relics, place names, sacred monuments, chapels or roofed chapels, also places related with living saints or spiritual authorities. The burial places of blessed persons and of God’s servants and locations of relics are analysed. The article also focuses on Churches and streets having saints’ names. The article discusses saint images in heraldry, and analyses monuments, chapels and other images dedicated to saints. The most popular saints of Lithuania are distinguished, and their attributes are presented. Finally, the question of the visitation of living saints and of spiritual authorities is discussed.
