Summary/Abstract: The article explores the origin and development of the Resian literary language in Italy, Province of Udine (Ital. Provincia di Udine), autonomous region Friuli-Venezia Giulia. Some of the first testimonies of the language of the Slavic population in the Resia Valley (Ital. Val Resia), published at the dawn of the Slavic studies, are presented; special atten-tion is given to the works of the Polish-Russian linguist Jan (Ivan) Baudouin de Courtenay, issued as a result of his expeditions in northeastern Italy in the last decades of the 19th century, which contain an scientifically valuable phonetic record of the live Resian speech, a detailed phonetic description of the Resian dialect, as well as the first written monument in this area – so-called Resian catechism. The development of the local idiom to a standard literary norm in the 1990s and the complex genealogical links between the Slovenian language and the Resian dialect also are examined. The study presents the diffi-culty of extending the scope of the new Resin literary norm, arising from different ethno-cultural and political factors.
