Summary/Abstract: The value of transactions made in the Polish pharmaceutical market (both the hospital and pharmacy market) in 2001–2010 was systematically growing; the growth trend was also specific for the share of private financing of expenses on medicines (the decreasing share of refunding medicines). Among medicines there are distinguished medicines sold by prescription (Rx) and those sold over the counter (OTC); they are characterised by a different set of demand’s determinants. In both cases important is advertising; in case of Rx medicines, it is addressed exclusively to physicians, and in case of OTC drugs — to all potential purchasers. In the surveys on accessibility of healthcare, respondents pay attention, inter alia, to the cases of lack of funds on purchase of medicines; they make attempts to borrow from the family, buy only some medicines or — following pharmacist’s advice — buy cheaper medicines.
