Summary/Abstract: The present article discusses the formation of the Devol literary centre at the end of the 9th century in the light of the whole Bulgarian state’s policy for the development of the Slavonic-Bulgarian literature and spirituality. Thanks to St Clement and St Naum’s apostolic work and as a result of Boris I’s purposeful policy in the South-Western Bulgarian lands a second big centre of Bulgarian Christian culture and literature was formed, which competed in its importance and scale with the capital centre in Pliska/Preslav.
