Summary/Abstract: The story in the novel How to Tie Shoes takes place during the slow death from cancer of the storyteller’s father who disappeared from the author’s life when he was barely seven years old. And so the time came, that very deadline, when father and son had to take a clear look at each other, face to face, to speak the unspoken, to terminate the lifelong silence between them. Nikola Petković writes about trauma from its movable center, from the traumatized consciousness. He records it in a language that attempts to overcome the chaos which it also reflects, upon the acceptance of the trauma. His words recur, return obsessively, undigested, they use humour to put up defenses, they search as much as they speak. Singing like a dismembered Orpheus, in pieces they seek the whole, the law, the shelter, the father.
