Summary/Abstract: The ways and means of the integration of Bessarabia into the Romanian state after the collapse of Czarist Russia stirred controversies and debates during the interwar decades. The field of sports did not remain untouched. Whilst the political and sportive conflicts between Bucharest and the former Austro-Hungarian provinces dominated the national arena, Bessarabia was, like the Old Kingdom itself, rather unconnected with the mainstream. The present contribution attempts to analyse this absence – rather than presence – of Bessarabia within the sportive landscape of Greater Romania, taking into consideration the Russian legacy, the interwar developments and the connections between identity, industrialisation, urbanisation and infrastructure.
