Summary/Abstract: The article analyses the system of characters in the novella Dr. Gospodov’s Sanatorium by Georgi Markov. The main focus of analysis is on the clash between the author’s outlook and the ideology of socialist realism. А typological and psychological parallel is drawn between the portrayal of the six tubercular patients in the novella and the Dostoevskyan Underground Man. A number of complex existential problems are approached in terms of biblical symbolism.
