Overload of roofs of buildings with snow as an element of risk in property insurance in the Polish climate area

Summary/Abstract: Very heavy snow is relatively common on the Polish territory. As a result of this phenomenon the danger of disaster and failure of the roof construction is increasing. Gradual transformation of snow into ice increases the roof load which can result in a disaster of a construction. The quantitative status of disasters and failures of roofs is systematically recorded and analyzed. The article deals with the scale of the threat caused by the snow roof load. We discuss the regional threat and examples of disasters. In the final part of the article we show that design errors, and errors of construction standards are one of the causes of failures and disasters of roofs in Poland. We present the need for the compulsory insurance of civil liability to engineers, architects and designers.
