Summary/Abstract: The position of the Catholic Church on Islam, endorsed by the Second Vatican Council and the popes, shows Islam as the religion of the One God, invoking the support of the revelation received by Abraham and adhering to similar moral codes. However, the picture of Islam and its God, painted in Polish Catholic publications, is dominated by negative stereotypes. They show Allah as irrational, utterly transcendental, inaccessible, remote and unloving God. Some authors maintain that he is a pagan god, having nothing in common with the God of the Christians, and charge Koran as a devilish revelation. Such beliefs, published by popular Catholic authors in widely read Catholic papers and websites, are often the only source of information about Islam for many people and shape their perception of it. This article presents some of the opinions of the polemicists and contrasts them with the views of the scholars specialising in religious studies, Islam and theology, as well as with Islamic tradition and the Koranic texts.
