Summary/Abstract: The Christian vision of nature assumes its value as God’s work. The message from the Scriptures says that creation is a revelation of the attributes of the Creator and the object of His love. Putting a man above the rest of creatures and giving him power over them does not mean the right to absolute rule, but the duty to care and look after the “garden of the world”. Misunderstanding of the command of the Book of Genesis and the treatment of animate and inanimate nature as an object of exploitation leads to degradation of the environment, and is a sin from the theological point of view. The contemporary teaching of the Church emphasizes the importance of ecological issues and calls for ecological conversion, that is, a change of lifestyle for responsible behavior towards the created world. Among the numerous statements of the Magisterium, a special role plays the ecological encyclical of pope Francis Laudato si’ – on care for our common home. This is the first encyclical devoted entirely to ecological issues.
