Summary/Abstract: The article discusses the place and role of religion in social and political life. The first part presents different models of coexistence between religion and state, with one domineering the other, or both going their separate ways, and conditions under which each of the players stays true to its principles, acknowledges its limitations and genuinely cares for the common good. The second part underlines three essential functions of religion: formation of conscience, betterment of the morals and creation of the public life.
