Summary/Abstract: The aim of this article is to present the most important tasks of the local government regarding the protection of cultural heritage, and to address the question of how local government fulfils entrusted tasks. A wide range of duties, distracted legislation, limited cooperation between the local and the central government, as well as the lack of funds and skilled staff result in low quality of local policy regarding cultural heritage. Instruments of support assigned in The national program for the protection and guardianship of monuments in the form of an information portal, trainings and assistance at preparing documentation cannot fulfill this role. The protection of cultural heritage will not be executed in the right way without an essential increase in funds and raising public awareness.
