Summary/Abstract: The purpose of the following study is to determine the connections between the personally and therefore subjectively measured emotional intelligence (EQ) and the EQ measurement based on the opinion of others, determined by a sociometric method. The method allows for an understanding of the dynamic processes that occur in different social groups as well as an understanding of the extent to which others would label someone as possessing a high or low EQ. Students from four different social circles took part in the study, with an overall number of participants at 84. The results from the study showed a weak correlation between the personal subjective judgement of one’s EQ levels and the judgement of their EQ by others. Nevertheless there seems to be a correlation between people who describe themselves as possessing a low EQ and the other people who also see them as possessing a low EQ. Similarly, there is a tendency for people of high EQ to be judged as emotionally intelligent by others around them.
