Summary/Abstract: The links between tradition and innovation are viewed as a cultural expression of the relation between past, present and future. As a transmission of certain matters from generation to generation, tradition is sometimes viewed as opposed to innovation. The author of the article holds that both tradition and innovation are inherent elements of culture. Innovation is either a consequence of an intrinsic dynamism of Tradition or a result of an external influence. What is regarded to be tradition or to be innovation to certain extent depends on the historical perspective from which we are evaluating them. These perspectives are those of modernity and postmodernity. The self-consciousness of the majority of older people in the present generation was developed under the influences of the images of the traditions of modernity. Meanwhile the younger people are shaping themselves by accepting the models offered by the culture of postmodernity, coming together with the process of globalization, the spreading of the electronic communication technologies, and the commercialization of culture.
