Summary/Abstract: The main purpose of the paper is an attempt to identify and analyse the main development tendencies of the international seaborne trade at the beginning of the 21st century. In the research the analytical descriptive method was employed with the use of published sources and statistical data of UNCTAD covering the period of 2000–2015. The paper discusses the statistics concerning the size of transports, the types of cargoes, the most important geographical destination on the world seaborne trade – in particular on the containerized trade – as well as changes in the vessel types and sizes and in the structure of shipowning countries. The analysis shows that the development tendencies of the international seaborne trade at the beginning of the present century have been mainly determined by the developing countries’ group, in particular China, which started to play a key role in the global value chains and was important source of the world demand for mineral resources. As a result Asia has become the dominating centre of the world maritime transport.
