Summary/Abstract: The aim of the article is presentation and short elaboration on the pedagogical implications of Ludwig Wittgenstein’s philosophy of culture and life. My hypothesis is that Wittgenstein’s thoughts can be considered as an important alternative to postmodernism inspired by Nietzsche’s philosophy, which is fixed on the ideas of transgression and egocentric individualism. After a short discussion on the conception of postmodernity in the first chapter, I will try to elaborate on the concept of upbringing, which emerges from the thought of the Vienna philosopher. I will indicate that instead of proclaiming the emancipation from collectively established cultural structures of the constitution of new values, the author of the famous Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus proposed a disposition to humbleness to what cannot be expressed through scientific language or metaphysics, but clearly manifests in social life in various rituals and ceremonies, through which the individual gains the ability to understand its existence as meaningful. The postmodern impetus of Wittgenstein’s philosophy lies therefore not in a rejection of modern rationality but in distancing from the specific modern tendency of constant progress and the resulting feeling of superiority towards pre-modern, archaic social life forms. Having in mind the contemporary emphasis on enhancing technological knowledge and skills among both children and adults, these pedagogical implications of Wittgenstein’s philosophy of culture and life seem to be remarkably valid and therefore worth further anthropological reflections.
