Summary/Abstract: Mimesis (a representation of reality on stage) is being critically reflected not only in contemporary theory, but also in theatre practices. The ways of representing reality are changing in Lithuanian theatre as well. Stage director Gintaras Varnas takes a special interest in the idea of mimesis. Varnas uses video projections and a special configuration of the performance space to deconstruct the traditional mimetic reflection and to show contradiction festering inside of it, a paradox when the stage as a mirror of the world while reflecting life inevitably reifies it. Another way to destabilize traditional understanding of mimesis in the productions of Varnas is related to the actor and the representation of character. Here again what we experience in the performance is the appearance of the negative, passive, „female“ mimesis as if the underside of the traditional active mimesis. The new mimetic strategies in the production of Gintaras Varnas tend to destabilize the status of reality, fiction, art and subject.
