Summary/Abstract: The article shows the circumstances in which “Sabałowa bajka” (“Sabała’s Fable”) was written by Henryk Sienkiewicz. It presents two rough drafts which allow to reconstruct the writer’s way of work, as well as the most important differences between the rough draft and the printed version. It also identified other versions “Sabałowa bajka”, taken down by people interested in the folklore of Zakopane (Bronisław Dembowski, Andrzej Stopka). Using the correspondence of the writer with his relatives for analysis, the methodology close to genetic criticism and biographical method was employed.
