Summary/Abstract: In the article a multiculturalism is considered as a situation when the population of a certain geographical area is characterised by different national, cultural, confessional identity. Lithuania traditionally is a multicultural country, but the mass emigration from Lithuania and the need for professionals will stipulate the coming of a number of immigrants to Lithuania from the countries of different cultural traditions. The formation of identity implies an encounter with the „others“, which means not only creative openness, but also a sort of isolation. The essential attribute of a cultural and national identity is self-consciousness, one of the traits of it is a sort of „(ego)centricity“ - a vital concentration on itself as a certain point of account of what is happening around. In the cases, when the religious or national meanings are prevailing in the self-consciousness of identity the inter-cultural dialogue can be significantly aggravated.
