The Lexis of the Codex Marianus in the Light of the Works of Clement and Constantine and Their Circle

Summary/Abstract: A range of lexemes peculiar to the Codex Marianus, including both archaisms and innovations, can be found in the writings of Clement of Ohrid and Constantine of Preslav. The Codex Marianus was written in Northern Macedonia, i. e., quite near the region where the disciples of Cyril and Methodius worked. Thus, the lexical similarity between the Codex Marianus and the texts of Clement and Constantine may be caused by local usage. Therefore, when the Codex Marianus has certain lexemes in common with the texts of Clement and Constantine the main argument in judging these readings should be support of other oldest Slavonic gospel manuscripts. If their evidence is convincing the lexeme may belong to the shared vocabulary of Cyril and Methodius and their disciples (tě, čьvanъ, rybitvъ, ędro, and probably žalije). If a deviant reading of the Codex Marianus, though having correspondence in the vocabulary of Clement and Constantine, is attested only in relatively late gospel manuscripts (balii, misa) it can be assumed that this reading could have been introduced into the Codex Marianus under the influence of the local (Macedonian) usage. On the contrary, when lexemes from the Codex Zographensis and Codex Assemanius are found in the texts of Clement and Constantine the coincidence should be regarded as a witness to originality of their readings (kurъ, mǫditi, glasiti).
