Summary/Abstract: Human economy, as one of the most important social institutions, makes a part of the economy of nature. Nonetheless bodies of knowledge about these three systems: economic, social and ecological, are based on drastically different concepts. This article presents a way for reconciliation of all the three sciences by using unified conceptual framework of nature’s economy. It turns out that purely biological concept of metabolism can be extended to encompass human societies and their institutions. The extended concept has been referred to as a social metabolism. This paper contains some basic examples show-ing the way how social metabolism can be quantified in terms of energetic and material flows. This can be used for classifying societies according to their metabolic profiles.
