Summary/Abstract: The purpose of this article is to discuss the variance contemporary conceptions of pilgrimage. The pilgrimage is a way to demonstrate different values and personal or collective identities. We distinguish traditional (religious) and modern (secular) pilgrimage. The concept of modern pilgrimage includes journeys to the valued sites, objects and events. The principal places of modern pilgrimage are associated with national, cultural and sport values, also personal places. This paper presents the main geographical aims of modern pilgrimage and also attempts to disclose other peculiarities of modern pilgrimage. The comparison of traditional and modern pilgrimage shows that structuralization and ritualization are more characteristic of the traditional religious pilgrimage as is hardship on the journey (travelling by foot). For both types of journeys inherent similar social and economic factors influence the journey, forms of journey, and phases of travelling.
