Summary/Abstract: The article deals with reading, briefly. The author explains the term, mentioning also a short history, including the emergence of the term „literary reading”; she also analyses the relationship author-text-reader. In the same time, she presents reading seen through the educational system, where it structures and refines the critical thinking. Reading, beside writing and mathematics, is „learned” even from the primary school, being one of the problematical activities. Both school libraries and information and documentation centres support the educational policy through their activities, as well as through the purchase policy and the development of the competencies in communication and the students’ reading abilities.
