Development and Origin of Ignalina and Its Name

Summary/Abstract: The article brings together historical and linguistic (origin of place names) research. Based on abundant historical documents, the study addresses the development of Ignalina: it traces the establishment of the first settlement and its original founders and presents the history of Ignalina owners, the noble Kamenskis family, from the establishment of the folwark to the period of selling Vidiškės manor. It also determines the personal name considered the source of origin of the locality’s name and explains the origin of the present name Ignalinà and its other variants.
