Summary/Abstract: Institutionalization is considered as the admission of an individual for anindefinite period in an institution ocrotire.În the elderly, is institutionalized asan alternative to protect the family, community and human proximity.Institutionalization, pate be regarded positively and negatively, withserious consequences for elderly, mentally at generally the most common arerelated to: loss of identity, autonomy, deculturaŃia elderly, are subjectedhumiliating positions, loss of roles it had prior to institutionalization, considerthe elderly as a whole, and are therefore subject to the same activities andhabits, many of whom felt compelled to participate.
