Summary/Abstract: The paper analyzes the predictors of dropout risk using data from a sample of almost 2000 students in grades 9 to 12 from high schools in Oradea. My data provide evidences that dropout is produced by poor integration in educational collectivities, being a dramatic form of school disengagement. At the aggregate level of schools, the best indicator of percent of students considering leaving the schools is school climate, independent of the social composition of school which is also a significant covariate at this level. Therefore, individual risk of dropout or the school level dropout rate cannot be satisfactorily accounted for using merely indicators of material or cultural deprivation and aspects like pedagogical practices and school management can make the difference in retaining students in schools.
